The Theory Craftist

Cradle to Cradle - Remaking the Way We Make Things

William McDonough &

Michael Braungart

This book was recommended to me by somebody whom I consider to be a my mentor and I hold in the utmost regard, Kamuela Enos.

Cradle to Cradle has completely changed my outlook on how I view products from a consumer and a designer perspective.

As a designer/developer I am beginning to see code creation as a means of up-cycling (means of refashioning a item rather than discarding it). Beyond simply Open Source (Code to be easily readable and open to be used) with Up-Cycling code you craft your program with end or “cradle” in mind. Meaning you are developing your software to be specifically organic or to be modified by another coder.

The book itself is created with the Cradle to Cradle model : “ The book has been created as a Technical Nutrient”, that is, as a product that can be broken down and circulated infinitely in industrial cycles”

Cradle To Cradle’s Authors gives chapter by chapter advice and examples on how to adopt its

philosophies.

This book should be read by everyone on this planet.

Snippets of wisdom

To this day conventional agriculture is still as scientists Paul and Anne Ehrlich and John Hodrem said several decades ago. “ a simplifier of ecosystems, replacing relatively completely natural biological communities with relatively simple man made ones based on a few straings of crops . these simple systems cannot survive on their own.

                                 The Diversity of Isms

Ultimately, it is the agenda with which we approach the making of things that must be truly diverse. To concentrate on any single criterion creates instability in the larger context, and represents what we can an “ISM” and extreme position disconnected form the overall structure. And we know from human history the havoc an ism can create- think of the consequences of fascism, racism, sexism, Nazism, or terrorism.

                 Form Follows Evolution:

Eco-Effective design demands a coherent set of principles based on nature’s laws and the opportunity for constant diversity of expression. It has been famously said that form follows function, but the possibilities are greater when form follows evolution.
